Why You Need a Wedding Search Engine — And How We Built One

Venues and Caterers and Photographers, oh my!

One of the most important (but also hardest) parts of wedding planning is finding the right wedding vendors. Unless you already have local knowledge and connections, you’ll probably end up finding wedding vendors online. Even if you have a personal recommendation from friends who were recently married where you are looking, most couples still turn online for more information. But today, searching for and getting intel about wedding vendors online is frustrating, time consuming, and stressful.

Why Google Doesn’t Work

When we started planning for our weddings, we quickly discovered that Google just didn’t work. While Google usually does a great job of “organizing the world’s information” (it’s their mission after all), they fall short when it comes to small businesses. This is because Google’s PageRank algorithm is based on the number of web pages that link to a particular site.

Unfortunately for us and everyone else planning a wedding, most wedding vendors are small businesses. These small businesses simply don’t have the time, resources, or knowledge to get the backlinks they need in order to appear at the top of Google search results. In fact, Google’s top results actually pointed us to large wedding vendor sites like The Knot and WeddingWire.

So what’s the problem with the top Google-ranked wedding vendor sites? The biggest issue is that there are so many of them. We found ourselves going to a lot of these sites individually along with Facebook, Instagram, and smaller blogs to get all of the information we needed about a single vendor. This detective work was time consuming, to say the least!

How we Built a Better “Google” for Wedding Vendors

After we realized that Google’s search engine just doesn’t work for finding wedding vendors, we became determined to fix this. We aim to build a comprehensive search engine for wedding vendors of all kinds.

Like other search engines, we started by using spiders and the first URLs that came up in a Google search for “wedding venue” as the seeds. We then followed the links on those web pages and will continue this process until we index every single wedding related webpage. Next, we needed a better way to rank the search results. Because a vendor’s quality is so important, we sorted vendors by blending the review scores they received across different websites. And finally, we included filters. These filters allow you to answer specific questions such as “which wedding venues in Tennessee can hold 200 guests and have a view of the mountains?”

Join the Movement

We want to be the world’s best search engine for wedding vendors. We believe that wedding professionals should be found based on the quality of their work, not how many backlinks they have pointing to their websites.

As we continue working towards this goal, we’d love your help. If you notice any information that’s missing or inaccurate, please let us know so we can update it for everyone.
